It could be the end of Sunday Streets in the Tenderloin and across the city, according to the organization that runs these events.

The Department of Public Health may cut funding from the recurring outdoor event as part of an effort to fill budget gaps. Sunday Streets would lose $216,000 per year, which constitutes the entirety of its city funding, as part of a $17 million cut to community based organizations.

Livable City, the nonprofit that runs Sunday Streets, is holding a rally today at 3 p.m. on the steps of City Hall, one hour before the department’s Health Commission meeting to discuss the proposed cuts. Meeting attendees will be able to make public comment. The Health Commission is slated to vote on March 2 about how to handle this funding decision.

Today’s Health Commission meeting is at 4 p.m., at City Hall, in room 408. Go here to find more information about it, including how to view it online and call in to comment.

Members of the public have until Wednesday, Feb. 4, to send the government written comments about this, and you can go here for instructions on how to do that.

People who live and work in the Tenderloin have told the TL Voice that Sunday Streets is a vital event, getting people outside and having fun in the sun together.
