The hotly-anticipated Issue 4 of the Tenderloin Voice print zine is about to hit shelves near you! A batch is fresh off the presses and we’re delivering stacks to distribution sites.
Many of you have noticed that it’s been a while since our last issue came out. That’s because this summer we pushed hard to help this community mobilize to protect local service providers, and in the aftermath we put the newsroom on hiatus so that we could rest. Upon returning a month ago, we got right to work pulling this zine together. That required updating some stories that were first published online a while back. We’re excited about the final product.

We’re trying something new: For the next month, if you begin a recurring donation we’ll mail you a copy of this issue, and we’ll get you onto our email newsletter too (unless you tell us you don’t want that). We don’t yet have the ability to promise new supporters that we’ll mail them future issues as well, though we’d like to offer that someday.
The backstory
This issue showcases not just the kinds of stories we want to tell, but the way we want to work with and for this community. We built News Relay Network, the company that publishes the Tenderloin Voice, in an effort to innovate on the relationship between newsrooms and their audiences. We wanted to share editorial control with the community and actively help them improve their lives.
In June, through the budget mobilization project, we saw our opportunity to step into that role in a big way. We reported on the stakes of the city’s planned budget cuts, and we also printed and posted flyers around the TL about upcoming rallies and other actions. In the end, many of the anticipated cuts were reversed. Issue No. 4 of our zine covers updates on the city budget battle and positive developments in the neighborhood, and features stories written by community members.
During our much-needed month off, we’d occasionally run into community members, who would ask us: “When’s the next zine coming?”
It may be a surprise to you that a good portion of our readers know us only through our print product. So for them especially, the zine was sorely missed, and we are elated to be bringing it back.
